Banda comentou como a pandemia afetou a criação do novo álbum.

Atire a primeira pedra, quem nunca cantarolou “IRIS”, musica do grupo Goo Goo Dolls, criada especialmente para o filme City of Angels, lançado em 1998. A musica do grupo Goo Goo Dolls ganhou os charts do mundo e faz sucesso até hoje! “Iris” rompeu a barreira de um bilhão de streams no Spotify, de acordo com a plataforma, em 2022.

Formada em 1986, em Buffalo, nos Estados Unidos, Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac e Mike Malinin misturam Pop Rock e Rock alternativo, até hoje. Em 2019, ano do lançamento do novo álbum “Miracle Pill”, eles vieram ao Brasil, pela primeira vez, para participar do Rock in Rio. Aliás, Rzeznik contou na época, que “Miracle Pill” é uma metáfora para a geração fissurada na gratificação instantânea e alívio que nós buscamos dentro das nossas próprias circunstâncias. Certamente, ótimas observações sobre a geração atual e a relação com as mídias sociais.

Goo Goo Dolls was formed in the 80’s, when the world was consuming a lot Dance music and the band is, definitely, part of the history of this music genre. How do the latest events (politics, environment issues, wars, poverty, etc.) touch your music themes? Can you tell us about your creative process, what has changed since that time?

Goo Goo Dolls – I try to write about people and their experiences but also their feelings, in our current social, political, and cultural situation.  I worry about the obsolescence of humans and the inequality of wealth wealth being concentrated in such a few hands.

Eu tento escrever sobre as pessoas e suas experiências, mas também sobre seus sentimentos, em nossa atual situação social, política e cultural. Eu me preocupo com a obsolescência dos humanos e a desigualdade de riqueza concentrada em algumas mãos.

In current times, Goo Goo Dolls do have great numbers in digital platforms. Let’s talk about “Iris”, the music is still an amazing success with almost 1 billion views in Spotify. Besides the timeless lyrics of this song, what else do you think made it so successful?

Goo Goo Dolls –  I just think it’s a song we can all relate to, we all feel a longing for a true deep connection with someone in this world, its, certainly the best part of being alive , I think.

Eu só penso que é uma musica que podemos com a qual todos podemos nos relacionar, todos nós sentimos um desejo por uma conexão verdadeira e profunda com alguém neste mundo, é, certamente, a melhor parte de estar vivo, eu acho.

 Can you tell us if “Iris” is talking about anyone in particular or was the song simply written for the movie City of Angels?
Goo Goo Dolls – I was writing from the perspective of the Nicolas Cage character, asked myself “What would I say to this woman, that I wanted to be with so much im willing to give up immortality itself to feel what love feels like”.

Eu estava escrevendo sobre a perspectiva do personagem do Nicolas Cage, então, eu me perguntei, “O que eu diria para essa mulher, que gostaria de estar com ela, que abriria mão da minha imortalidade, para sentir o que é realmente amor”.

Goo Goo Dolls played in Brazil at a big festival for the first time in 2019. Could you talk about the invitation and the experience of being to be on stage at Rock in Rio?
Goo Goo Dolls – It was the most exciting night of our career! Jon bon Jovi has been a great friend to our band for a long time, so to be able to open for them in front of such an enormous audience was the thrill of a lifetime.

Foi a noite mais emocionante em nossa carreira! Jon Bon Jovi é um grande amigo da banda, então, abrir o show deles na frente de um publico tão grande, foi, surpreendentemente, uma emoção e tanto!

In 2022, you released “Chaos in Bloom”, how did the pandemic influence this album?
Goo Goo Dolls – This album is pretty angsty , the pandemic had a huge emotional impact on me as well as the social unrest in world. The division, the chaos of change was scary, it really affected me, I needed to write about it to get it out of my system.

Esse álbum foi muito angustiante, a pandemia teve um grande impacto emocional tanto em mim, quanto no resto do mundo. A divisão, o caos da mudança foi assustador, realmente me afetou. Eu precisava escrever sobre para tirar esse sentimento de dentro de mim.

Could you tell me  about your musical influences. What has changed since the beginning of the band?
Goo Goo Dolls – I always seek out for music to inspire me, doesn’t matter if they are old or new.  From all genres, my influences are wide and get all mashed up together so I can’t give a definitive answer on that.

Eu sempre procuro por musicas que me inspiram. Não importa se são velhas ou novas. De todos os gêneros, minhas influências são amplas e se misturam, então não posso dar uma resposta definitiva sobre isso.
